About Escherichia coli
Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. coli, is one of the most extensively studied organisms in biology. Most strains are harmless inhabitants of the intestinal microbiome, although some can cause disease. Its rapid growth and easily manipulated genome have made it an essential model for investigating DNA replication, gene expression and protein synthesis. Engineered strains are also used to manufacture medicines including human insulin.
